Are You Backing Up Your Files?
We all learn by mistakes right?
Good I’m glad you agreed with me because it’s hard to admit that I once was making the biggest mistake in my business! I knew from the beginning how important it was to backup my files…but I never did it. There were several reasons why. (1) I honestly just didn’t ‘get’ how to do it. (2) I figured nothing would ever happen to my computer that I needed backups (how naive was that???) and (3) well I just pushed it aside and let it slide.
I’d like to say that I was fortunate enough that nothing ever did happen to my computer but that’s not how the story goes!
I made it until August of 2008 without anything ever happening to my computer that interfered with my files (or more importantly my client files!) but then all of a sudden out of the blue it was infected with a virus. I was also naive enough to believe that if my anti-virus software was detecting a virus that it couldn’t install itself on my hard drive. Boy was I wrong! I was without a computer for about 3 or 4 days but I walked away lucky.It was able to be fixed without losing any of my files. How that possibly happened is beyond me.
It was a very valuable lesson and one I wish I hadn’t had to be in that situation to learn. It taught me the importance of backing up on a regular basis. The thought of losing not only 2 years worth of my files, pictures, etc but my clients was sickening. What made the situation even worse was that I knew if the files were not going to be able to be saved that if I had only been doing backups it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal.
The point of all that rambling is that I immediately signed up for Mozy unlimited backup and I pay only $4.95 a month to have all my files back upped onto their system! For that little amount of money a month and the feeling of peace it was the smartest decision I ever made and wish I would have signed up for their service way back the very first time I ever heard of them.
Their service came in handy after only 4 short months! I signed up in August and in December my computer was once again infected with another virus and this time it wasn’t able to be fixed without me losing everything. But thanks to Mozy I requested a restore of my files and after about 24 hours they sent me a link where I was able to download everything. No sweat. No worries. Just peace of mind knowing that I still had all my files.
Take it from someone that’s been down the road of worrying about losing everything…BACK UP YOUR FILES! And do it on a regular basis

Ya, Jeff was telling me the other day about a back up site too. Of course I forget the name of it now, but I will ask him again and do it too! Definitely worth the cost and little bit of effort!!

Great story! Nice to hear things worked out for you. So many people don’t think about backing up until it is too late and they lose all of their photos, files etc.
